Hypothetically speaking

Those of you follow me on Pinterest might have noticed my pins taking a slight swerve in direction lately. Actually, more of a major detour. A one-way ticket heading back up the tracks, destination: Weddingville.

It's not for me, though. It's, um, for a friend.

FINE, it's for me. Although there is, in fact, a friend. One who is trapped in that curious limbo that you might call, if you were so inclined, a pre-engaged state. So I offered to create a wedding inspiration board for her, one her boyfriend wouldn't see. Just to give her a few fun ideas, a bit of fluff and nonsense to brighten a dark January afternoon. Keep it light, keep it fun. If I happen to spot something in my internet wanderings that looks like it might be to her taste, I'll stick it in there, no big deal, nothing too heavy.

That was three days ago. I'm currently on 110 pins, and counting.

From hairstyles to dresses to invitations to colour schemes to flowers to artfully-arranged tree branches dripping in fairy lights, I cannot seem to stop.

I've been trying recently to curb my interest in all things wedding-y, after someone told me it was "time I got over all this wedding stuff". In fairness, the comment that incited this display of tough love was something along the lines of, "[sigh] Every time I hear 'In the Bleak Midwinter' [gaze wistfully into middle distance], part of me mourns the winter wedding I never had". They had a point. I needed to let it go. Stop playing the if-I-were-getting-married-again game, stop second-guessing my choices, stop indulging in hypothetical wedding planning every time I think I see something more stylish, more meaningful, more beautiful.

So I restricted myself to only the bare wedding essentials. Filled myself up instead with fashion blogs and lifestyle blogs and fumbling our way through adulthood blogs and I thought I was fine, I thought I was over it, but it turns out that all I needed was the merest of nudges and here I am again. Gorging myself on ribbons and lace, scooping up diamonds and dresses with greedy, grasping fingers.

It's okay though, because it's not for me. It's for a friend.

  1. haha, I so totally still second-guess my wedding. ALL. THE. TIME.
    I need to stop too.
And I'm down to only APW as my "wedding" reading now - but its really so much more about LIFE than just the weddings, right?

  2. Yeah, I know what you mean. And now my sister and my brother are getting married this year. Down to the rabbit hole we go. Because of course we have to help right?

  3. I have become a pinterest addict and then a week ago the site wouldn't let me log in, saying my account didn't exist (the horror!). I've not quite got over the loss x

  4. Belly laughing at the awesomeage of your pinterest board, especially the groom. Mine!

I occasionally send ring suggestions to my pre-engaged brother. I want another damn wedding on the horizon already.

  5. Laughing at work at this, especially the link to the 'pre-engaged state'. I am loving the fact I can officially start my wedding board, plus openly read all the wedding blogs. I am going to love the planning of this wedding.

P.s it is my 2nd so I get to decide all over again!

    1. When I first saw this comment, I thought my dog had somehow commented on my blog (we call her Smidge a lot). Then I thought no, Kirsty, don't be stupid.

      Smidgen isn't getting married.

  7. I'm totally stuck in reliving/reblogging/replanning/repinning my wedding, and I LOVE it. There's just too much pretty out there to stop! And I have too many amazing wedding pictures for them to shut up in Iphoto for no-one to see. It's going to make me an excellent source of all things wedding when the time comes for some lucky friend...

Although my sister has a 'wedding' board on pinterest and it freaked.me.out that she was thinking about getting married...(but it turned out the pretty had just got to her too!)

  8. I'm feeling a bit smug here because I'm maid of honour for my best friend and so that means I'm *allowed* to keep looking at wedding blogs. Plus I write a column for one, so research must be done.

    Erm, no excuses here then...!

    xx

  9. I'm right here with you Kirsty. I've even started a regular column on my blog on wedding planning. It all comes back to weddings, doesn't it?

  10. I still like looking but haven't got wedding redo syndrome...yet (it's only been 2 months!)

  11. Surely no one who ever planned a wedding would tell you to get over the stuff? It's the stuff that's the fun bit, getting to look at pretty pictures is surely the Gods rewarding you for doing a wedding??
