Nina put in a request on Twitter for more pictures of Smidgen, and seemed surprised when I was like, OKAY THEN! Do you guys honestly think I need much encouragement to post pictures of the cutest greyhound in the history of greyhounds*? Come on. You know me better than that.

So, above, we have yet another photo of Smidgen sleeping. Apparently, opening Christmas presents is exhausting. Also, FYI, I totally knitted that. It's a snood. For the dog. Lord help me, what have I become?

Smidge getting her pose on. Yes, she has two different coats. Because apparently *that* is what I've become.

This is pretty much her facial expression for the entire time she is (a) in a location other than our flat, and/or (b) in the presence of anyone who is not me or Fin. She's "shy" (for which, read a total wimp). Awwwww.

Okay so Smidgen isn't technically in this picture, but let's get real: there is no way Fin and I would be going for a walk at dusk in the middle of winter if it weren't for her. She might not be in it, but she's in it.

Wow, this walking business is sooo tiiiring. (This is seriously how she sleeps.)

And finally, her favourite spot in the whole house. She likes to poke her nose over the back of the couch and make big, sad, starving-puppy eyes at us in the kitchen, until we take pity on her and give her a nibble of whatever we're making. Unless it's pork, in which case there are no puppy eyes sad enough to outweigh the vile, toxic stench of the farts that would inevitably follow. That's dog ownership, folks. G.L.A.M.O.R.O.U.S.

(You might also want to admire our Christmas tree in the background, which I officially declared The Gayest Christmas Tree in Edinburgh. It even had disco balls on it, and the word "NOEL", which in the absence of a proper Ë could just as easily be a reference to Noel from Hear'Say as a nod to the festive season. I kind of miss it.)

*I have no way of verifying this.

  1. She is adorable and don't worry pretty soon you'll have a whole selection of coats for her-two won't be nearly enough!

  2. She is gorgeous. I'm planning to get a dog this year and am giving serious thought to greyhounds!

  3. She is lovely! And I was loving that Christmas tree photo even before I discovered it was the gayest tree in Edinburgh. Everyone loves a Hear'Say reference!

  4. I think Smidgen should have her own fanclub. I'll do the newsletter.

  5. Amy, sign me up! I can do the puzzle page...

Kirsty, I love S. Those eyes would melt the hardest of hearts.

  6. Yay more dog pictures! And one coat - two coats, even! - are definitely not too many. We're on our way to 4... which is awesome, embarrassing, or both.

  7. I have a greyhound question! Smidgen looks smaller than most greyhounds I've seen. Is it possible they come in an economy size? Because we would love a dog, but have a size limit in our apartment complex... Also, she's so adorable.

  8. @Erin - Ooh, I love greyhound questions! Smidgen is really quite small for a greyhound (hence the name). The females usually tend to be a lot smaller than the males anyway, but we think she might have been the runt of the litter because she's quite teeny. We went to an open day at her kennels last weekend and some of the male dogs were HUGE.

You can also get whippets, which are a slightly smaller greyhound mix, and Italian greyhounds which are much smaller, but I don't think they are so readily found for adoption and also I don't know if they have the same personality (they may do - I just don't know much about them). Because greyhounds are pedigree, you can pretty much expect them to share a number of common traits, most notably being lazy and affectionate and not requiring much exercise - perfect for a flat. My best bet would be to go to a kennels that has lots of greyhounds and just look for a wee one!

  9. ahh!! SMIDGEN. she is I think verifiably the cutest greyhound in the history of greyhounds. if there isn't documentation of this, get on that. nobody will argue.

I have no idea what a snood is in the context of a dog.. my understanding of the word is something like a hairnet.. BUT I am impressed you knitted her one.

  10. @d-day Bahaha a hairnet! I would love to see her in hairnet. No, the snood is kind of like this but much less professional looking. Fin won't let her wear it. Boo.

  11. Too, TOO cute! Smidgen needs a regular feature on your blog :-)

  12. Thank you! Now I'm so glad I asked! I do believe she might be the cutest greyhound ever. I LOVE that picture peeking over the couch because Cassie does the exact same thing. Just replace Smidgen's lovely smooth snout with Cassie's sheep-like mess of fur. And Cassie is also a TOTAL wuss. In fact she would hide from Smidgen - any dog that is more than a few inches bigger than her is a Threat and deserves to be treated with the utmost caution. Silly dogs, how we love you.

  13. I'm making a snood too! And perhaps some leg warmers...

  14. She is so so so cool! I saw the first picture and already can feel what it's like to touch her nose :)
