Democracy in action
Tuesday, April 09, 2013I cut my hair off. Who am I to argue with the popular vote? But part of me wishes I'd waited until it was actually, as opposed to nominally, spring. Specifically, my ears and the back of my neck are less than thrilled. Brr.
Speaking of the popular vote, we're agonisingly close to finishing the final season of the West Wing and I know we're supposed to care who wins the election but OMG WHO CARES ABOUT THAT WITH ALL OF THE ROMANTIC TENSION OMG OMG. How the hell did people cope, watching this unfold over weeks? I am beside myself with excitement. If you haven't seen it, what are you waiting for? And if you have seen it YOU KNOW WHO I'M TALKING ABOUT. (Sorry, the West Wing has a tendency to bring out my all caps.) There's a faint whiff of Grey's Anatomy lingering in the White House corridors these days, with all of the snogging. There doesn't seem to be much governing going on here, people.
I doubt that sort of thing goes on over at the Scottish Parliament. At least, I hope it doesn't. Let's just say there aren't many Holyrood couplings I'd be quite so happy to watch on screen. The mind boggles.
For those of you who might not be fully up to speed with your Scottish politics, we have a referundum coming up next year to determine whether Scotland should remain part of the United Kingdom or become a fully independent country. Facts and figures are being hurled at us from all sides already, but neither camp has yet addressed my primary concern: what about Eurovision? I don't know if I'm ready to face a future where Scotland's finest musical talent has to slug it out in the semi-finals against the demented warblings of some former plumber from Azerbaijan. It's time for the campaigns to stop fretting about taxes and national identity and start getting into the serious issues.
Just as long as they don't start snogging.
P.S. On a completely unrelated note, I added some new pictures to the portfolio. Thanks, Lauren!

Eurovision! How could we all forget about Eurovision?
ReplyDeleteThat's it, I am no longer paying attention to either camp until someone starts paying attention to the real issues.
All the important issues, what about Eurovision indeed!
ReplyDeleteHAH! Every time the Republican debate resurfaces in Australia one of the main concerns always seems to be whether we can still participate in the Commonwealth Games and kick everyone's arse in the medals tally. I'm serious! Bloody preoccupation with sport.
ReplyDeleteI've been following the debate over Scottish independence with great interest. Interesting times.
Shonda Rhimes loves The West Wing, so I'm never surprised by the odd comparison between the two shows. Not least because Debora Cahn (who wrote some of the show's best episodes in the later seasons, not least of which is the show's superb penultimate offering)now writes for Grey's and has done some good work there. Personally I am more of a CJ/Danny fan than a Josh/Donna fan, but yeah - watching the final episodes week by week was kind of tortuous. In Australia we got double doses when the last season finally aired here in 2007 (it wrapped up around Easter).
OK, this comment is long enough now. But it's my first comment here, so, you know :)
And it was a GOOD ONE! I love CJ and Danny too. Only three episodes left now - I'm beside myself.
DeleteAt least you've reminded me that I have practically a whole series of Grey's Anatomy to get caught up on once the West Wing's over. Silver linings...
Season 8 of Grey's really pissed me off (I stopped watching for a few months after that ridiculous 'what if' episode) but season 9 has been pretty good, I freebased most of it the week before Easter.
DeleteAAAAAHHHHHH, I'm only on series 4 but I think I might know who you're talking about if the tension has been building since basically the start of the programme?? Clearly West Wing brings out my all caps and excessive punctuation.
ReplyDeleteI loved the table you styled for Lauren McGlynn. So pretty, and with all the wooden details it really captures her aesthetic (as in, it matches her blog, but I am sure you engineered all that to happen!).
ReplyDeleteWill we see your hair please? Do you look like Carey Mulligan?
Aw thank you! Yep I was trying to tie in with her blog and all of her branding, I'm so pleased somebody noticed :)
DeleteI've no doubt you'll get to see the hair at some point, but sadly I'm not sure I look like Carey Mulligan. A colleague did tell me I looked like Twiggy this morning - I'm hoping she meant 60s Twiggy and not present day Twiggy...
You did such an amazing job! I would work with you every day of the week and pay you loads of money were I rich. You're going to be a famous stylist one day. Mark my words. xx
DeleteI have recently discovered tenuous Scottish ancestry (VERY tenuous on my side and marginally less tenuous on my husband's) and am having to sit on my hands to prevent myself from ordering EVERYTHING in tartan. Really.
ReplyDeleteI think I love your blog, would you mind if we ran away together? x
ReplyDeleteOk. You bring the biscuits, I'll bring the West Wing box set.
DeleteI still wish that Toby and CJ had got it on. And that maybe I can be CJ Cregg when I grow up.
ReplyDeleteI watched the whole series on box set too and got crazy into it - still some of the best television I've ever seen (along with Battlestar Galactica and Deadwood)
