I saw Callie Shell's behind-the-scenes photography of Obama's 2008 campaign on a BBC documentary the other day. It's very evocative. I especially love the ones showing Michelle and Barack together. (It might interest you to know we have a Michelle Obama magnet on our fridge, right next to a picture of Hildegard of Bingen. We like smart ladies.) I would urge you to look at the full exhibition here.

I'm scared to watch the news tonight. I might not live in the United States, but there are plenty of people I love who do, and I cannot bear the thought of that tax-avoiding, Muppet-hating twatface having any power over their lives. Please, America, make a good decision today.

In related news, Fin and I have been spending a lot of time lately watching a fantastic new television programme. We're talking the cutting edge of small-screen entertainment. You might have heard of it: it's called The West Wing.

Yup, that's right. We have NEVER SEEN THE WEST WING. Or rather, we hadn't seen it until last month, and now we are obsessively working our way through the entire seven-season box set. Seriously - why did nobody ever tell me? It's BRILLIANT. Sure, it's set in an impossible liberal fantasy land where everyone at the highest level of government is wise, principled and downright hilarious, but who cares? It's brilliant.

Is it too late to ask Martin Sheen if he'd like to run for President?

  1. Loved these photos and your comments. I am terrified of Mitt (who is ever called Mitt?) getting into power. Holding my breath for all my American family - they will just all have to pack up and come here if it all goes wrong. And I too have a Michelle Obama fridge magnet - kindly donated by you two. Fingers, toes, knees - all crossed.

  2. Confession time - I have also never seen the West Wing, but have been hinting at the box set for Christmas. Since I pretty much just get straight into bed after work I need a good US tv series to get me through the winter!

  4. We worked through the whole lot in about 10 months. It's great!
Here's another reason why people shouldn't vote Mitt. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitt_Romney_dog_incident. Idiot.

  5. Sigh. Oh, Barack. Oh, Michelle. I just... Gah. I have no words for the profundity of my love for those two.

And I may not *be* American, but their politics casts a huge shadow over the rest of the world. You bet your ass I have a vested interest in the outcome of their election.

  9. I haven't seen West Wing either. I know I should. Downton and Dexter are just getting in the way at the moment.

I know what you mean about blogging breaks. I do it every now and then when I feel over it and bored. And then I find it hard to start again, but once I do, it all flows. I'm glad you're back. I missed you.

  10. I am so jealous of you never having seen The West Wing and getting to watch it all now. I've watched the whole thing 3 times and I love it a little bit more every time.
I met Richard Schiff who plays Toby a couple of years ago when he was in a play in London and I'm pretty sure he must have thought I was absolutely crazy as I was just so excited to be chatting to Toby Ziegler!
