So, you know that news I was waiting for? Well, it turned out to be Bad News. News involving my mum and the selfish, rude, demanding cancer that keeps insisting on taking up more room in her body. It's like a bad flatmate, scattering its crap around the place with no regard for personal space and refusing to clean it up. Playing loud, horrible music in the middle of the night when all we want is a moment of calm, just one blessed second of peace and quiet and not having to worry for once. No such luck.

Fortunately the doctors in Edinburgh are good, the best. They have a plan. There's no way to get rid of this anti-social interloper for good, we can't just kick it out and lock the door behind it, but we might be able to find a way to live together in relative harmony. She is in their hands, and I am keeping positive, because she has no choice and neither do I.

Of course, the plan comes with a cost. So this afternoon, my mum and I are heading to the wig shop, NHS prescription in hand, for the third time in twelve years. I'm voting for a pink one this time, because why the hell not?

  2. So sorry Kirsty but I love your attitude! Really hope your mum's treatment isn't too horrendous, I'm sure you'll all help her to feel as positive as possible.

  3. Oh love. Sending big thoughts and prayers your way & your mum's way. Stupid frickin cancer. I hate hate hate it. Affecting so many people we love. I just found out last night that my godfather's has come back in his shoulder. So surgery it is again next week. Makes me want to punch cancer in the face - if it had one. :-\

  4. I think pink with a big polka dot top hat would be simply adorable.

Sending you both all the strength and luck in I have in me. If the cancer is anything like our lodger, I hope you learn to live with it keeping all your crockery upstairs, in return for it turning a blind eye to your very noisy house party.

  7. So sorry it wasn't better news, but glad to hear she's in the best possible hands. You all seem to be approaching this in the best possible way - with positivity, some dark humour and side by side. You're obviously doing a grand job of supporting your Mum (and family) and I hope that Fin is doing the same for you.

Here's hoping you have good news to share soon xx

  10. Silver lining time. She can at least style her hair properly.

Otherwise this sucks. Kill it with kindness. It's not going to know what's hit it.

  11. Shit.

Well, this sucks. I am so sorry.

But if any mother-daughter duo can face this with intelligence, bravery, and last but most definitely not least, impeccable style, I'm betting on you two.

  18. I hate writing this in a silly comment box - it needs cardstock and scripty letters. Or something.

I guess the sentiment remains the same - I'm wishing you both so much strength while you beat this thing into submission. You're in my thoughts.

This is the mum here back from wig shop! Thank you all so much for your lovely kindness to both me and my darling daughter. We will give the bastard cancer as big a kicking as we can! You will be disappointed to know I didn't go for the pink sensation, but pretty pleased with the one I have chosen - I suppose you get it right when you get to the third one. Sure Kirsty will keep you all posted - I will be too busy looking after the new wee puppy we are getting tomorrow (yes, I am certifiable!). Loads of love xxxxx

  23. Thank you so much everyone, all your lovely comments mean a lot. We found a gorgeous wig, though sadly not pink, and I discovered that wig hair is significantly nicer than my actual hair. I may have to get one of my own.
